John Wester was 23 years old and single when he emigrated to the United States in 1854 and settled with his mother and siblings on the Wester farm on the old Green Bay Road in the Town of Belgium, Ozaukee County, Wisconsin. Family tradition holds that John was engaged to Elizabeth Meyers who remained in Luxembourg when the Wester family migrated. It is believed that John began to work in the copper mines in the upper peninsula of Michigan soon after he came to the United States. After working a few years, he returned to Luxembourg to be married to Elizabeth in a civil ceremony there. The couple then traveled to the United States, where John continued to work in the copper mines around Copper Falls and Eagle Harbor, Keweenaw County, Michigan. Several of their children were born there. It was not until 1862 that John and Elizabeth celebrated their marriage in a religious ceremony at Lake Church. John and Elizabeth (Meyer) Wester had 11 children: Katherine Wester married Peter Netzinger; Michael Wester; Elizabeth Wester married August Andersen; Anna Wester married Matt Berns; Rose Wester married Joseph Jirtle; Margaret Wester; John Wester; Catherine Wester married Matt Stoffel; Frank Wester; and Henry Wester.
